The saviour of the Jews. The priest of Rumšiškės, the saviour of the Jews during World War II. During the war, the priest J. Žemaitis saved about 100 Jewish children and was awarded the Cross of Lifesaving Rescue for that in 1999. In 1956-1994, he was a parish priest in Rumšiškės and was a lecturer at Kaunas Interdisciplinary Priest Seminary until 1972. He made many efforts to move the wooden church and the belfry from the old Rumšiškės to the new ones. Since 19 August 1994, he was the altarista of Rumšiškės parish. He is buried in the churchyard of Rumšiškės Church.
